OUR CHURCHES

All Saint’s South Kirkby

All Saint’s is our oldest church building. Indeed there has been a church on the site since the Anglo Saxon era. The name ‘Kirkby’ means ‘village with a church’ and it is thought that the wooden church was replaced with a stone building after a fire. Parts of the current building date from the 11th century (or even earlier), while others, such as the West Tower, were constructed in the major remodelling work that took place around 1470. The church interior is beautiful with a real sense of the worship that has taken place there for centuries, and there are many interesting features. An addition of the last century are the beautifully crafted pews and west end memorial screen by Robert Thompson, known as the Mouesman of Kilburn. The west end houses a pipe organ by Abbot & Smith of Leeds. The tower holds a peal of bells.

Mass is offered at All Saints on Sunday at 9.15am and on Wednesday at 10am.

The exterior of St James the Great church, Ryhill

St James the Great Ryhill

Built on a ridge looking out over the beautiful countryside and commanding views of Wakefield, the church of St James the Great was consecrated in the year 1876 and serves the villages of Ryhill, Havercroft, Cold Hiendly and Wintersett. The charming peel of its carillon chimes can often be heard across the village. The St James’s Centre was built in 1990 and provides a welcoming community venue for both church events and for private hire. The church houses a pipe organ by J. W. Walker which is used in worship.

Mass is offered at St James’s on Sunday at 11.15am, as well as during the week on Wednesday evening at 7pm and on Friday morning at 9.30am before the weekly coffee morning.

St Luke's Church Grimethorpe

St Luke’s Grimethorpe

St Luke’s was originally built to serve the mining community in Grimethorpe in 1904. It is the largest of our churches and provides a great venue for local community events. There are a number of unique features at St Luke’s. A new marble altar, using the reclaimed ‘Ladystone’ as a base, has been situated in the Lady Chapel. Two new modern engraved glass windows, designed by Nathalie Liege, using a revolutionary process, have been installed in the Lady Chapel. A new crucifix (the Grimethorpe Icon), based on the style of Giunta Pisano with a Byzantine influence, and painted by Romanian artist Christ Paslaru, hangs from the chancel arch. St Luke’s also has a magnificent organ installed by Jardine of Manchester in 1913 which we are hoping to restore. Understandably the church has a strong bond with the mining community and the memorial to those who died at Grimethorpe colliery is alongside the war memorial outside the church.

Grimethorpe and Brierley are one parish with two church buildings. We worship at St Luke’s on the first, third and fifth Sunday of the month at 10am. Mass is offered at St Luke’s on a Wednesday at 10am before the Place of Welcome and on Friday at midday.

St Paul’s Brierley

St Paul’s Church was consecrated by the Archbishop of York in 1869 as a chapel of ease to St Peter’s Church in Felkirk. Its 23 metre clock tower is a well-known local landmark and can be seen for miles around. In 2018 Heritage Lottery Funding provided for the re-ordering of the west end of the church, providing a new kitchen and accessible toilet. The west end also houses a charming chamber organ by John Stacey of Derby. The parish of Brierley joined with the parish of Grimethorpe in 2005 and St Paul’s is blessed with a Church of England (CofE) Primary School with which we have a strong working relationship. The church graveyard is closed and in the care of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, however, the church adjoins the council run Brierley Cemetery where burials still take place.

We meet at St Paul’s for Sunday worship on the second and fourth Sunday of the month.
