St Luke’s was originally built to serve the mining community in Grimethorpe in 1904. It is the largest of our churches and provides a great venue for local community events. There are a number of unique features at St Luke’s. A new marble altar, using the reclaimed ‘Ladystone’ as a base, has been situated in the Lady Chapel. Two new modern engraved glass windows, designed by Nathalie Liege, using a revolutionary process, have been installed in the Lady Chapel. A new crucifix (the Grimethorpe Icon), based on the style of Giunta Pisano with a Byzantine influence, and painted by Romanian artist Christ Paslaru, hangs from the chancel arch. St Luke’s also has a magnificent organ installed by Jardine of Manchester in 1913 which we are hoping to restore. Understandably the church has a strong bond with the mining community and the memorial to those who died at Grimethorpe colliery is alongside the war memorial outside the church.
Grimethorpe and Brierley are one parish with two church buildings. We worship at St Luke’s on the first, third and fifth Sunday of the month at 10am. Mass is offered at St Luke’s on a Wednesday at 10am before the Place of Welcome and on Friday at midday.
